My check engine light has come on. I have spoken with some friends who have mechanic experience and after realizing that it has been quite a while since they were changed, they decided it was my O2 sensors. I have someone who will change them when I buy them. But how many are there and how can I purchase them? Any suggestions on course of action?

I agree with autotech on having it properly diagnosed... Just because the light is on or it says lean DOESNOT mean the o2 sensor is bad. out of say 50 cars I work on, only maybe 5 will need the o2 sensor for o2 codes.Please help with cooling tin on a 1970 Type I Volkswagen Beetle engine?
Depending upon the engine combo.. 3 to 4 o2 sensors at roughly $100/piece at the Ford dealer...

There are 2 in front of the cats that deal with fuel control... and depending upon the set up, either one or two after the cat to insure it's working...

The rear ones I wouldn't worry about unless you get a code.
Some say replace the front ones every 60,000 miles. I usually wait until the "check engine" light gives me a specific code for a bad one before I replace it.
