I am having a very odd and annoying problem in my 93 BMW 325i and was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or knows what may be wrong...

When Im driving sometimes the gauge cluster will just turn off at random times and come back on after a random amount of time. I give it a good whack and nothing happens, it just comes back on by its own. When it comes back on the chime goes sounds and all of the lights turn on on the cluster, just like the car is starting, but nothing else turns off.
How much would it be if I bought a new motor for my car?
The car also sometimes resets the trip meter when its sitting in the garage... I am very confused and any help would be appreciated. Please, no smart responses with "Oh just buy a Ford" or "BMW sucks..." its just lame and its not in my question :). Thanks.

You could have a loose connection along the fuse wires (that services / powers the instrument cluster) where contact is unreliable. Please have that cheaked out. There is also a fuse the is likely burned out but marginal contact remains... there for when u hit a bump the cluster may just go out. Hitting the dash would not likely help because the fuse is located in the engin bay area.

Remove the instrument cluster and make sure all connectors are secure and a little spray of WD 40 on the contact point would help.

Proceed to cheak fuse box at engin bay area and inspect / change the fuse concern and also cheak contacts there..

You may possibly have a loose connection between the 2 halves of the terminal joining the cluster to the main loom. Separating the connector and spraying both halves with 3M contact cleaner should do the job. Make sure that both pieces lock together with a "snap" when they are rejoined.
