I have a chevy 383 strokermotor that i is still sitting on the engine stand?

Question:
I have a chevy 383 stroker motor that i is still sitting on the engine stand?
but the problem is that the cylinder number 2 is up i notice this by placing a screwdriver thru the spark plug holes and i am using a hei high electric ignition coil distributor not points.
so what should i do ? or can i drop it like that in the car?
i want to know if the the timing is off if the cylinder 2 is up?

turn engine by hand on #1 plug hole till u feel compression then bring piston to top then check to see where # 2 piston is then u should be able to drop in dist on # 1

You need to find a screw in stop for the #1 cylinder . You turn the motor one way and mark where it stops . Then you turn the motor the other way and mark where it stops using the same reference point you used to make the first mark . Half way in between these two marks is top dead center . The style of the distributor has no bearing on where top dead center is . There is timing mark tape you can buy to remark the balancer with the correct numbers . You have either installed the wrong timing marker (theres a few styles ) or your balancer has slipped . If you have a 383 stroker you probably need a 400 balancer and flywheel or your motor will vibrate terribly

the wrong harmonic balancer is on the motor.you need a balancer off of a 400 to time it right, plus the weights will be out of phase, and not only will the engine shake when running, you WILL break the crank..especially the first time you rev her up.
