An alarm is better than nothing. I would start there... it won't stop a determined thief, but will deter some of the novice ones. Some alarms even have a paging option that would send a page to you when your alarm goes off.

yeah definatly get an alarm first of all. I do recommend a Two Way Paging System, preferably with an LCD screen, most places will sell them for about $250. Secondly, if you have anything that will attract attention to your car, remove it ASAP. I live up in Los Angeles, so i have the same problem. My car doesnt look stock, yet i have a two way lcd pager alarm, and i know a lot of people in my neighborhood so they help me keep an eye out for my car. You cant always trust everyone so just go with the Alarm, and removal of any outstanding cosmetic things done to your car. Also if your car is black or red, that doesnt help considering most people look for cars these colors to break into.
