Why does my LS1 V8 Knock like a Diesle Engine so Much??

Question:
I have a 2000 Camaro Z28 with an LS1 350 V8 in it. It makes knocking Nioses, like a Diesle Engine. I have heard Lots of LS1 V8's, and have heard the SAME Engine Nioses. Is the LS1 Supposed to do that?? And What is Making this Niose?!?

In 2002 GM released a TSB # 02-06-04-023A ( Technical Service Bulletin) on this problem for your car and many others in their line. basicly the rear knock sensor gets water in it and causes corrosion in the sensor which will cause a mild to severe engine knock...usually!! during acceleration but may do it anytime. also the check engine or service engine soon light may come on and when checked with a scanner show a code # P0332. they recommend replacing the rear knock sensor ( but i say do both) Under the intake manifold. they also say to make a silicone water dam in the shape of a horse shoe around it after installing it, 3/8 inch wide and 1/4 inch high with the open end of the horse shoe facing the rear of the engine.Also to remove and disgard the foam from under the intake manifold before installing it. Dealer time to repair is about 2.0 hours. so be advised it may take others longer. Hope this helps you.

could be detonation. This is where the gasoline in the cylinders is compressed to the point where it explodes before the spark is actually fired. A higher octane gas will fix this. There may be some other things causing it but this is the most common with high performance engines.

One should not hear any noise coming out of a Finley tuned LS1. Their may be a slight ticking noise-around the intake manifold, this are the injectors at work. If you are hearing any metallic knock you are in trouble.
One may hear a slight knocking while accelerating, almost like marbles clashing together, this is know as "PINGING" or PING. Usually this is a result of Pre Ignition.. Low octane Gasoline's will create this annoyance that slowly destroys your engine.

The Fix. Switch to a higher Octane gasoline, Anything above 89. 92,93 is better,. The gas will last you longer, your car won't ping and you will have better performance.. Hope this helps.. Will.

Read the manual. I suggest BP, Shell or ARCO. Forget cheap gas stations. This is a high performance engine...use high performance fuel. It will make a difference in detonation.

sounds like piston slap and chevy has alot of it in thier big engines. I dont know what oil your running but might try like 10w-40 might quiet it down some but i know alot of owners are mad over this. chevy says its ok as it would cost them a pretty penny to fix all of them.

Sounds like piston slap. We had ls1 engines in australia imported from the U.S and the first batch had piston slap. GM Holden were fixing the tolerances here before putting them in our cars.
