Well, I am looking to purchase a Volvo, and came across two vehicles that I like, a 1994 Volvo 850 wagon or a Volvo 940 sedan.

I did drive a 940 sedan and liked it a lot until I was hit by truck on the interstate w/ it...very good car. The one I'm looking at purchasing is fairly worn out interior-wise, has 138,000 miles, and is selling for US$2,900. The 850 wagon is very, very nice looking, has 109,000 miles, and is selling for $3,500. However, I have heard 850's often have big repair issues.

So, fellow question/answer people, which one should I get? Mind you, I have the cash on hand to by either one.

personally i would take the rear drive 940 but that's just methe 850 is at timing belt mileage so plan on another grand to do the job properly if automatic check the fluid for burnt smell and discoloration. [if burnt, pass on this car] if service records are available look them over carefully.. the wagon is probably your best bet. have your trusted mechanic check it out before you buy. one last note don't hedge on the 850 timing belts this is a kiss of death engine if the belt breaks or water pump fails the idler and tensioner pullys should be replaced as well as gas tensioner and water pump

I just bought a '95 850 Turbo Wagon for $2700, with 131,000 miles, good condition body and fair interior...but had to replace brakes, all tie rods, struts/shocks, ball joint...next will be the serpentine chain, all bests and hoses and a few other items. Don't know what the future holds, but I bet I'll get another 70K+ out of her in the next 7-10 years, so it'll average out. Dont get the 850 there full of trouble.The 940 is one of the best cars ever made very reliable and it will last for 500k miles easy.And their very cheap to service and repair.

the 940s stayed the same for the longest time, still had the same B230F engine (2.3l 4 cylinder) that the late 90's 240s and 740s had. very reliable, hardly any recalls or chronic problems. they had a very soft suspension and the bushings would wear out quickly, but that was about it.

even though i know the 850s had their share of problems and recalls, i would probably go with the that because of the styling and performance.
940 hands down. The 850 had lots of problems and eats parts for a living. The red engine Volvos were bulletproof. I've been looking for a clean 940 for quite some time and will have one some day.
I would, however, get the price down a bit, maybe in the $2500 range. Use the worn interior as a sticking point to reduce the price.

Volvo 850 S.U.C.K.S!, crap, 940 was the last good car Volvo Build. Word from a Swede.Go for the 940. I never liked the 5 cylinders.
Well I say,.,.,. The 940 sedan. Bottomline Volvos are Top notch Cars. However, speaking from experience, I own a '94 850 sedan, and replacing parts from under the hood is not always too cheap. The bright side in your case is the low mileage...and of course the 940 is probably faster than the wagon.
