Getting a lot of power from your engine is going to be like bleeding a turnip. If you choose to follow any of the previous bolt-on modification advice, I would very much advise against getting a "performance" air filter. They do not add any noticeable power and can ruin your mass air flow sensor with the oil on them (it is located just down the tube from your filter). If you get AEM or K&N you'll be fine they have the best filters you can get. They won't add much hp. 5hp, more if you have other modifications. The best setup for you would be I/H/E = intake, header, exhaust. helps the car breath better and throttle response is amazing. Go with name brands though no ebay knock off's.... I dunno how much hp the fit has stock prolly something like 130? if you go I/H/E it'll add 15-30 hp.

get an AEM cold air intake. getter gas mileage. lets you car breath better. don't mess with headers, not worth the $300-500. its hard to get that decent performance with out droping some $$. unless you go turbo, but that's $3000. biggest bang for your buck.I have a 1994 Ford Explorer and I seem to be having an issue with the key ignition cylinder.?
once u got the air-filter and the exhaust installed look for 'piggyback computers' i would recommend the one from 'APEXi V-AFC or APEXi AFC-Neo'.. this tiny gadjet tunes your factory fuel setting to maximise power and also to set the vtec cams opens earlier..you can feel instant acceleration..and this 3 stuff doesnt cost that much..Does anyone know anything about 1998 suzuki esteem?

After doing some research I decided to install a K&N Air filter ($75 + TAX) instead of installing a cold air intake system for $400+.
The main reason for my decision is that the cold air intake will only get you about 5 to 6 HP more. The K&N air filter will give you about 3 to 4 HP.
Another reason it that the K&N air filter is washable and reusable and will last for the lifetime of your card. In the long run you will save money. Honda may not honor the engine warranty if you install a cold air intake.
I suggest that you buy the cleaning solution with your air filter ($15) and do it yourself or have your service technician do it for you at every oil change.

What I have learned from searching on the net is that the first thing you want to do is have your engine intake air more freely. The second part is to have it exhaust more freely (better exhaust system and exhaust port (near the engine)). A better exhaust will be expensive (probably $500-$1000) this is just an estimate ... I did not research this yet.

Another thing to consider is lighter alloy rims and tires which will increase you handling and fuel economy. I selected Konig BriteLite 16" and Toyo Proxes 4 tires for summer and will re-use the stock 14" steel rims for the winter.

At the first oil change, I will switch to AMSOIL XL 5W20 with the AMSOIL oil filter. This should also help for fuel economy and will protect your engine much better than the synthetic blend oil that Honda provides, especially if you're driving you FIT hard. (I ordered my AMSOIL online... you can get it at cost and shipped to your home).
