i have a 79 chevy pickup with a 350 turbo trans, i cant start the truck up and i can shift into gear but nothing happens. its like im stuck in park. its idling fine n i dont know wat to do

Have a look at the linkage from the shifter to the tranny. Sometimes the clip will fall off at the linkage on the tranny. If the linkage is working ok then you have a bum modulator valve on the side of the tranny. The gears may be stripped. They used to sell the books at the Auto store for your make/model of the car. I don't know how mechanically inclined you are, but you can fix it yourself. You might have to order the part or get it from a junk yard.Will vauxhall wheels fit honda civic?
if you got the dough, install a new transmission. This one is obviously worked...and has seen better days.you probably need a rebuild I just got my 99 GMC Jimmy outta the shop yesterday from a rebuild. Thank god the dealer covered it because its like 2 grand job. My tranny wouldn't shift into Reverse and would only go about 10 mph. Time to take it to the shop sorry

Check the fluid level. If good then check the shift linkage to make sure it hasn't broken. If both of those are good then it may be an internal problem like the pump. Good luck.Be more specific. Is it a manual transmission or an automatic? If it's a stick shift maybe there is something wrong with your clutch. If it's an automatic maybe you should check the fluid levels. Try having a transmission specialist such as AAMCO look at it. I am not a mechanic, but I'm just making an educated guess, so don't swear by what I say because I could be totally off.

try adding tramsmission fluid if that doesnt work then get your trany checked.ok, try this.have someone in the truck and while someone take the linkage off and try to chang it from under the truck.if it changes from under the truck,then it must be the linkage.

You stated that the truck will not start. If this is the case, then on shifting, naturally it"s not going to shift. and move in any gear. OK, you later said the truck does start. If the the trans was working yesterday, then today you should at least have either forward shifts or reverse shift. You don't loose all at once unless there is not enough fluid in the pan for the transmission pump to pick up. In some rare cases the shift rod clevis pin will fall out at the side of the trans shift shaft and nothing will happen on shifting.More Questions & Answers ...
