Question:
I recently bought a used jaguar X-type.The first issue I have is that I can't get the key out of the ignition unless I unplug the battery. Secondly, the transmission is automatic and it looked in great condition, but my shifter won't go to gears 4, 3, nor 2. It's only driveable on D. I drove it for a while and then when I was about to park I forced the shifter to 4 and transmission fluid came out. Any help is appriciated it. Thank you in advance for your reply.
Could it be the transmission cable or something worst?

How many miles do Toyota Land Cruisers usually run without serious problems?
Without having the vehicle in front of me I cannot say what the problem is for sure, but I would probably start with the shift lock solenoid. I can't say what the cause of the fluid leak is, or if it's related, but I don't feel that this is a transmission issue. The ignition key cannot be removed unless the car knows that it's in park, there are various electrical switches that inform the control module that you are in park, and it will then actuate a solenoid that allows you to move the key to the lock position and remove it. Since it affects both of these things the shift lock solenoid is where I would go first. If you do not have access to any wiring diagrams and service information, as well as electrical evaluation skills, then I would take it to an ASE Blue Seal rated facility, an elite certification given to only 3-4% of all shops in the nation. You can find one in your area on ASE.com.P.S. I have found access to the same program I use in my shop at the local library where I can access any information there that I get at a professional repair facility. I also have remote access that gives me the Chilton repair information from my home! Chilton isn't as good as Alldata or Mitchell, but it may very well give you the information you need if you have the necessary training and equipment to use it. I hope that this at least gives you a starting direction.
I think that you should have it professionally checked. It's most likely more than just a transmission cable. If you bought it from a dealer and they gave you a warranty then go back to them. If not go to an AAMCO or a transmission specialist.
