Question:
I just bought a 2001 Volvo V70XC with 84,000 miles on it. Today the Check Engine light came on while driving around town. I stopped at my garage and had my mechanic put his diagnostic on it. He came up with a code TWC, and had no idea what that meant. He reset the light and said to take it to a Volvo dealership if it came back on. He suspected the new fuel (10% ethanol) may be effecting the car - he said that was not an uncommon cause for the light to come on, especially with no other symptoms.
The BMW Z3 convertible, V6 rear wheel drive?
I did some internet research and found that the TWC code is pointing to a problem with the three-way catalytic converter. Seems to be consistent with the mechanic's hunch that it may be a problem with the new fuel.
What is the speed governor on a 2005 Ford Five Hundred SE?
Anyone else have this problem? Any way to link it to the new fuel? Or could it be a ligitimate problem with the catalytic converter?
Answers:
I work at on volvos at a volvo dealer and we have been seeing alot of converter faults lately. usually it is just from short trip and the cold weather. the converter get loaded up from short trips more in the winter because it runs rich longer. Usually you can fix it by clearing the code and warm up the car then drive a mile or 2 at 4500 to 5000 rpm to get the converter hot enough to clean itself out. the converter is about 1200 bucks and usually just cleaning out the converter works.
I suspect your hunch is correct. It most likely is related to the recent fuel change. I suggest you switch back damage will occur to the catalyst if the condition keeps reoccuring very evpensive repairs to exhaust if the catalyst fails. Also check runabilty of vehicle over all make sure it is tuned properly and has no misfires
