I had the hose come off from the water pump to radiator core, so i fixed that and then the car became air locked. At first she operated at normal temp when driving and go into red zone at idle, now she stays in red zone all the time. If the radiator is off, the car is operating at normal temperature. Coolant is circulating and is heating up. When the cap is replaced temperature runs into red zone again. What could be my problem?

I would look at the radiator. If you are sure you have circulation then your thermostat is ok. Bring the engine to operating temp.. Turn it off and carefully feel inside of radiator core. If you feel any spots that are not as hot as others you have a partially plugged radiator. It will show circulation in the tank but there is not enough to cool the engine. Take it to radiator shop not auto service shop.do a compression test your head gasket might be bad from overheating when hose came off

Those engines are known for headgasket problems as someone else pointed out. I don't think Pontiac recalled it but the aftermarket used a redesigned gasket that was an improvement over stock. The best test for the cooling system is to have a shop pressure test it for leaks. The radiatior cap itself could be faulty and it wouldn't hurt to change it since it only costs $5 or so.
