If you are asking about top speed - for the price the Vette is the one. If you want acceleration - I doubt there are many 12.7 second quarter mile front drivers out there!
When you're talking about speeds this fast, you're probably talking more than 40 or 45 thousand bucks. I hear the rally like cars, like the Subaru WRX, are pretty fast, but I still don't think they can keep up with either the Shelby or the Corvette.

As far as which one is faster, I'm not sure. I'm guessing the Vette, especially when it comes to curves, although I have heard that the Shelby is pretty sweet in the turns, better than earlier models.

in a straight line, the GT500 might have a slight edge, but when it comes to a racetrack, it would get massacred by the vette. the Subaru WRX STis and Mitsubishi EVOs will outperform the GT500 on a racetrack, despite being down a whopping 200 hp. Theyre also significantly less expensive. With the money saved from a vette/GT500, the Evo/sti could be a serious track beast.

The Corvette is faster that the Shelby. Power to weight ratio wins.
As far as performance cars in the 35-45k range, then you have the Subaru's and the Mitsubishi to choose from. They are front wheel drive high power econo boxes and certainly not what I would consider sports cars.
The mustang is like a toyota corrola compared to the corvette. The corvette goes 182mph and 0-60 in 4 seconds. The Mustang goes up to 155mph and 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. No competition there.
Other V8 cars that are the same speed and price as the shelby mustang are the Audi S4 and the new BMW M3. Both with a 0-60 of 4.8 seconds and top speeds of 155mph.

THE SHELBY WAS A HUGE DESIGN MISTAKE SHOULD NEVER WEIGHED MORE THAN THE STANDARD MUSTANG GT BY 250 OR SO POUNDS. MOST OF THE WEIGHT PUT IN FRONT FROM IRON BLOCK 5.4 FURTHER RUINED THE HANDLING DYNAMICS. THE VETTE YOU CAN GET FOR 50K AND RIGHT NOW A SHELBY WILL RUN HIGH 60K TO LOW 70 K. THE SHELBY IS 12.6 QUARTER AND 4.5 0-60 THE WEIGHT PROHIBITS IT FROM HAVING THE HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS AS THE VETTE. FOR 50K I BUILT MY OWN MUSTANG---NEW SUSPENSION SUPERCHARGER, WHEELS AND TIRES. THE SUBARU AND THE MITSU JUST DON'T HAVE THE LOOKS. THEY ARE'NT VERY POLISHED CARS. THEY ARE VERY COMPETENT CARS.
