I had this problem on a ford F250 also. If you got a towing package on you truck it is in the wiring itself. It was on mine just a simple groundwire after that the light went off and everything was good. i own a repair shop and it wasn't the transmission that was the problem,its the switch that selects the over drive that's bad,either that or in the wiring harness that goes to the transmission that gets a shorted wire in it,basically unless the other transmission was slipping,there probably wasn't anything wrong with it,i have seen this happen a few times,i had one customer who had spent 2 thousand dollars on his to make the light go out,and it took me less than 5 minutes to repair it, he was a little upset with him self,and the other mechanic,but your problem may be in the harness or the connector,good luck i hope this helps.it could be a simple wiring problem. keep in mind that auto repairers want your money so they will do anything to drain your pockets. take it to a ford dealership. and let them perforem a full diagnostic check. after all if problem persist after repairs have been completed they will have to return your money.
One help would be to take it over to autozone and get what the code is for to help you out.

But as others said, usually wiring issues if transmission didn't fix.. I've found the fuses burnt, fluid getting into the connector, PCM and other things.. The code at least will help narrow down the harness to go after.
