Originally "Gran Turismo", a term invented by Sergio Pininfarina in the 60s to describe a then new series of heavy-weight Ferraris which had four seats and a trunk - "big touristy one", translated with some liberty, something big enough to go traveling in is what they meant. The term was later applied to car races of a certain category to which only those vehicles were admitted, and in the 70s, pretty much any crummy little thing churned out by the European car makers was named a "GT", because it had two doors, four seats, a trunk, and some striping down the side.
