How do you fix a brake light switch on a 2001 Jetta GL?

Question:
I have a 2001 Jetta GL and recently I started my vehicle and tried to put the car in Drive and it will not let me. The EPC light is on and another light that looks like the brake light indicator (this light is similar to the one on the gear panel). When I press down on the brake the car will simply not go from Park to any other gear. While pressing down on the brake trying to put the car into drive, my friend informed me that the brake lights weren't even on. I'm guessing it's the brake light switch.

Has anyone ever heard of this problem or have any solutions to resolve?

Here is a tivia question?

You may want to call your local vw dealer and see if your car was part of the recall. There was a recall on the brake switch which caused the problems you're describing, and they will fix it for free if its under the recall. Good luck!
