As a Toyota tech what you are describing is not mechanical problem with the engine or transmission. Toyota has been continually releasing new software updates for the powertrain computers to enhance and improve shift performance for many different Toyota vehicles. Your local dealer can tell you if there is something available for your vehicle and there is no charge for the update/reprograming provided you are still within the factory warranty.

I own a transmission shop, and this is a new one on me, but I did learn something from you today! That don't sound good at all, and sounds like you need to have them install a new transmission, or find whats wrong with yours. It could be designed that way, but I really have my doubts. Sounds like it might have a faulty (VSS) vehicle speed sensor.
