Question:
My F250 has a 460 in it and will not stay running. A friend of mine and I have been working on it for a few hours and we had it running, but it would die if you took your foot off the gas. We were trying to time it, but it just wouldn't cooperate with us. It would backfire through the carb which would mean that it is out of time. I was also thinking that the plug wires were crossed as well. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

remove number 1 spark plug. turn the motor over by hand ie. socket on crank damper. When the piston comes up on compression stroke look at the crank to see if it's at TDC 0 degrees. remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointed at #1 plug position. If it isn't your timing chain may have jumped. At the same time reverse the crank and see how far it turns before the rotor moves..shouldn't be more than 10 degrees. Check the breaker plate in the distributor for wear breaks with the vacumn advance disconnected might be falling apart. If experience is anything at all it's time for new timing gears and chain. replace the water pump at the same time to save future woes. good luck1997 Pontiac Bonneville. Security System probs. First, get your timin down, if it still dont stay running, check your fuel pump(pumps with dual tanks) and all fuel systems. Also see if your solenoid is bad, i had that problem wiht my 87 F-250 with a 300, yer solenoid should be on the left side right behind the battery and there should be a wire off the starter goin to it, and a few from other places, if thsi is bad it is part of your problemMore Questions & Answers ...
