Chrysler LeBaron Engine Chatter?

Question:
I have a 1991 LeBaron with a 3.0 V6 - There is a really weird engine chatter noise that will oscillate in sound and go away completely - then later come back .. it changes tone and speed .. Its not a "knock" in the engine and it runs fine.

CJ vs.TJ????

What would this be and is it serious? How could I go about fixing it -- kinda embarrassing in a drive thru :-)

The tensioner is an odd-duck kind of a sound... it's not always there and is annoying.

How can I use the integrated phone of my Volvo S80 (year 2000)?

Basically, it's that the bearings are just a bit chattery. you can replace the tensioner pulley, but the sound will come back... sometimes in a few months, sometimes in a few years.

The other answer about the valves/guides, etc., is also possibly correct. The Mitsu engines are renowned for their valvetrain noise.. Similar to the 2.2 litre 4 cyl. that Chrysler used through the 80s and part of the 90s... sure, you could get a valve job and have it all tightened up, but, as with the tensioner, the noise would return.

I have a 2002 explorer 4x4/ all wheel drive. I have lost both.?

This problem sounds like the classic serpentine belt tensioner. Your 1991 car probably has the original tensioner on it. The tensioner is probably worn enough to where the belt actually slips off the pulley and then back on again creating a peculiar noise. On every car these noises are different. I could have a car just like yours with the same problem and it could make a totally different noise. If it isn't that I would check water pump, emission equipment, power steering pump or maybe the alternator. The bearings in these components wear so pinpointing the problem can sometimes be an aggravating situation. Stay calm and check things systematically. Good Luck!

What is the best performance car?

it's prolly the cam and lifters. you can learn to just live with it or have it all changed. it's a common problem with those 3.0...it's prolly a tink tink tink type of sound. i know what you mean about it being embarrassing i've heard people tell us that our motor was going to blow up...haha. It doesn't affect the the running of your car.
