Question:
I purchased my 2002 VW Jetta GLX new from the dealer about 5 years ago. I got two keys plus a valet key. The two keys are the special VW-style key with key fob integrated that allows for remote key entry.
I've been using one key for the past 5 years without any problems. Last week, I needed to use the spare key and found that the key no longer starts the car. The key fob still unlocks/locks the car, but when the key is used to start the car, the car starts for a second but then shuts off.
When I called the dealership, they told me that VW spare keys need to be used every so often and my spare key had "lost its memory" so I would need to bring all of my keys in to have them reprogrammed. All this to the tune of $170.
does anybody know a website to purchase some headlining mouldings for a 81 buick regal?
I've never used the spare key before this, and I think it's wrong for a spare key to stop working if you don't use it. I think the dealer just never registered the key to the car. Is this a legitimate problem with VW spare keys and should I have to pay to get it fixed?
Answers:
i have seen only a few keys just stop working, but it is possible. i think most likely the key was not programmed to the car or there was repair work done that required key reprogramming and they didn't do both keys. $170 seems pretty pricey to me for the job, at the dealer i work at we only charge 1/2 hr labor($48). i would call around to other dealers and see what they are charging.
how much is a 1997 Honda accord lx worth?
Are you sure the key fob just doesn't need a new battery? I had to get a new battery for my key because the remote features stopped working. Just get the battery from the parts dept. and do it yourself.Yes, it can happen. The key fob is battery operated, and that battery is kineticly recharged (is my understanding)
That SPARE key of yours probably sat a lot.
id like to know the top speed of a 1995 toyota supra turbo?
My solution is that I rotate my keys :-)
If you have 2 working keys, you can actually program the third key IN your car! The car itself will do the work for you.
Has anyone had problems starting their car(suzuki sidekick) in wet/rainy weather?
go over to tdiclub.com to read about fob reprogramming
If it's like the 2003 Passat there's a reprogramming method in the manual, just follow the procedure and everything should be OK.
why is it that all the cute girls drive VWs?
That $170 fee is BS, they are just ripping you off, or trying to, reprogramming the keys is not hard.
