Question:
If i am on the hi-way at 65 and let the car coast to a stop, at about 50 i can feel it "shift" but it isnt shifting into 3rd. it downshifts to 3rd at 35. Could i be feeling the torque converter unlocking? This is a 1989 ford thunderbird.

How do you fix the Passenger doors on a 2000 GMC Extended cab?
it is a automatic they do downshift and up **** when needed as far as coasting the tranny is coming out of overdrive to 3rd. The next time your driving take the tranny out of OD yourself and feel what it does when you let off the fuel at 50mphProbably the torque converter unlocking and/or the idle air solenoid opening up a bit to avoid lean backfiring on deceleration.
is the mercedes cls550 faster than the e46 bmw m3 or e500?
On MY car, the t/c unlocks every time I lift off the "go" pedal. I believe you are feeling the tranny come out of overdrivewhat states are glass packs illegal in?
In 89 the thunderbird did't have lock up converters. You may feel it shift from Overdrive to third slowing down. How do I change my headlight?!?
I agree with kayef57 & me too. Firstly, your car does NOT have a lock up torque converter, since it is equipped with the AOD transmission. That particular transmission uses TWO input shafts, a solid one, and a hollow one. In overdrive, the engine crankshaft "eliminates" the torque converter completely, and connects DIRECTLY the geartrain, via the direct clutch & overdrive band, through the solid input shaft. In third gear, or direct drive, BOTH of the input shafts are utilized, and "locked together to achieve a 1:1 ratio. As me too advises, try driving the vehicle in the 'D' selector position to see if there is a difference in the way the car behaves.More Questions & Answers ...
