It's entirely possible; without the belt to regulate them, the valves will stick open (i.e. protruding down into the combustion chamber) and the pistons can slam into them at TDC. Valves can punch through pistons, and the valves themselves can bend or break.

of course! if that timming belt breaks you instantly have damage to the pistons. the engine must be opened and replace pistons. i had the same problem. you must change your timming belt every 50.000 km.
