Recent-year 3.8 V6 engines are known to have great power and economy (16 mpg? you've gotta be kidding!). They are very reliable and, whilte antiquated compared to other engines, compare favorably because they are a good design. Some of them are supercharged, which adds performance, but can also add complexity. The base ones tend to be more than adequate for most types of driving. As far as which ones are best, perhaps your best bet is to check out Consumer Reports magazine, as they have a pretty decent list of reliability issues for many cars for their respective years.
