I am owning a E34 525i 1990 model since June last year (2006).

If everything has stopped working, it should be along the fuse / wire line. Sometimes fuses blow / break but there is still marginal contact. This may also happen to main fuses.How many gallons can a kia rio hold?
Check / replace the fuse first.. if problem is still there, remove meter cluster and check main connectors for unreliable connections. u may want to clean copper contact points.

These kind of problems sometimes occur.It is not like 1990 european cars will develop electrical problem..even japanese car too.
