well my warning light has been on for a few weeks now - my ex took the descent car! but before he left he told me there are two types of service either yearly and you get the warning a week or 2 beforehand or there is the wear/abuse/mileage service where the engine decides if it is being driven hard and it could be a sign of xomething more serious. mine is booked in for tomorrow so I could let you know.What would you rate a CHEVYS ten best performance motors ?

Depending on the problem you shouldn't ever drive with the service engine light on. I have never heard of the computer shutting down the car for having the light on too long. Your best bet is to go to a trustworthy auto shop and have them plug into the cars computer. It will tell them exactly what's wrong and from there you can decide whether it's worth fixing right now. Some auto supply stores also do this, just ask if they do diagnostics. I suggest calling your insurance if you have loaner car coverage.

I own a shop, and if the light has been on that long, then I wouldn't worry about it. Letting the light go unchecked for a long period of time will only cost more money to get the repairs done due to the fact it will cause the catalytic converter to clog up, and yes it could in fact clog so bad the engine would stop running after a while, but one would notice a big loss in power before it done that. The computer may not shut the engine down, but a clogged exhaust system can shut it down. The computer is not programmed with a shut down mode, so no the computer wouldn't shut it down.
A word to the wise is; once a light comes on, have it checked out as soon as possible, or it could cost you a lot of money that you didn't bargain for.

oh god. the check light. Shh. I've got a Beetle & the damn thing comes on 24/7 I had the lil light on for. 4 weeks & their was 6 PROBLEMS with the stupid thing.
