My 88 16v GTI was spewing coolant when I bought it. I replaced the water pump, head gasket, and some other small components. Now that I am ready to dive it wont spark. I am confident that the valve timing is correct and the firing order is right. My electrician dad checked the coil and it checked out. I need to get my GTI on the road

The coil wires fail on 87-92 16V engines at around 30K miles, always keep a spare. You need to see if the coil is sparking at the coil and not at the plugs. You need a spare spark plug to test at the end of a plug wire or damage to computer will result. Serious!
You have two computers under the plastic panel behind the firewall but in the engine bay. They flank the wiper motor. The one on the passenger side has a vacum line and runs the timing, the other is fuel and spark- both cost in the 500 dollar range, a piece!

IT would require a detail analysis of the maintenance performed and some specific tests with weird equipment to diagnose this. It may be time for Dad to visit a good private VW shop to have it sorted out

Hello sorry to hear this problem I would have to say since the auto is newer than a 1987 that it has a computer system, hensce the dreadful computer may be advancing your timing or even worst it has a short in the board I would locate it un plug it see if it starts then replace it Im sure it has one since most vehicles after 87 do. good luckSound like you got a real POS on your hands.
VW's have always had f*ed up bostch electtrical systems. I would suggest checking all your grounds. Then get out of it ASAP!

no spark at the plug? but the coil is tested good? That leaves the plug wires if I'm, reading your problem right.Something tells me you may have meant to say that the motor turns over and theres nothing firing. Leave the two 10mm distributer hold down nuts just snug enough to rotate the distributer.Make small adjustments to it until the car seems to want to start. once in that sweet spot,let the car run and adjust your timing with a timing light.
It's been a while since I worked on a 16v vw engine but if I remember it may be possible to put the distributer in 180 degreed out by accident. Make sure its on the right way. I thing there is two notches where it meets the distributer drive
