In the Black Hills Sports car Club, Auto-Cross and Ice-Racing my A-2 GTI 16V(an 87 and a 92) never have lost to a Honda Civic Si or CRX Si. That streak runs from 1988 to this winter. We race bone stock vehicles.The reason is TORQUE. VW have some and Honda's and Toyota's just flat don't.
Nissan sentra SER's however do have torque and it is a seesaw battle between us.
Face it a VW is just so friggin much cooler and it has an aftermarket that caters to all tastes.

The other issue has to do with keeping the VW running.
The honda can pull these numbers up until the 200,000 mile mark, while the vw is lucky to stay running for 20,000 miles.
VW... especially the ones with a 2.0T 200 hp engine like the GTI and GLI... 0-60 in approx 6 seconds. (same motor used in the '08 audi tt)
