1997 Escort 4 door - temperature and fuel gauges are not reading correctly?

Question:
When I turn the key on the temp. gauge goes all the way past hot and the fuel gauge reads half all though I have a full tank. Also the low fuel light flickers on and off - kind of like there is a bad ground. Somebody has to know whats going on
