It flashes cause it wants to catch your attention right away, flashing means not only something s wrong but it can cause extreme damage and needs to be checked immediately. ok, if your check engine light is falshing it means the engine is misfiring (not firing on all cylinders for some reason). the reason it flashes instead of just lighting is because excessive misfiring causes the cat. conv. to heat up & eventually go bad which causes excess emissions.You should check your plug wires & plugs. more than likely the plug wires are arcing causing a misfire. when u pull them out of the plug hole (while the engine is OFF!) look for traces of arcing.
you should see white burn marks or oil saturation from the valve cover gasket leaking into the hole. in either occurance the plug wire & plug should get replaced.
