I can tell you the Ion's handling is crap, I owned one. The G5 is probably best because Pontiac is positioned as a more sporty mark. But personally I think of these three you'd get the most bang for the buck out of the Cobalt.they are all the same car basically, built on the same platform, if you want better handling go with the cobalt SS supercharged or saturn redline

G5 just came out. Cobalts been out a couple of years now, but I'd still go with the G5. Pontiac dealers generally treat their customers better than Chevy dealers.
You may want to check out the Saturn Aura, voted car of the year, and also made by GM. It's roughly the same size as the other models you mentioned, and has the added bonus of being a Saturn. They're notorious for bending over backwards for their customers.

The Saturn Ion has not had very good reviews; primary complaints include the instrument panel in the center of the dashboard (instead of in front of the driver), cheap looking interior upholstery, subpar body panel fit and finish and a noisy engine.

The Cobalt has had quite a few demerits as well (noisy engine, unreliable, etc.) that will probably also transfer to the G5. You may want to check Consumer Reports for all the specifics; the April Auto issue is on the stands now.

If you are looking at the base models, they are all very similar.So in that case I would just get whatever I liked best. Or whatever I could get the best deal on. The Ion is being replaced so you might be able to find a really good deal on one.

The base models all have the 2.2L ecotec. It's a great little engine. Very underrated. It's HP rating isn't spectacular, but it has a phenomenal torque curve that gives it surprising performance (0-60 ~8 seconds).
