AS 41 cases started in 1972. It was a change of alloy that made the case more resistant to having the head studs pull out. 1968 and 1969 had a terrible problem with the studs pulling out. In 1970, there was an improvement but the best case (the AS 41) came out in 1972.There should be a case identification # right on the front part of the motor located beneath the alt/gen stand. That list of letters and #'s is what you can tell what year models that engine case was supposed to be in. Its not like a vin # so its not going to say what year exactly per say but it will indicate which years which is close enough. To tell you the truth if you have a pre 67' microbus that is not the correct engine case for that model bus. Those came with as21 "magnessium cases" also known as the "single oil relife case" The as41 is the "dual oil releife case" which was a 1600 dual port motor. I hope this helps.
