Jeep came from "G.P."G.P. stands for the "General Purpose" vehicle in the military.
The GP sounds like "Jeep" and was adopted as such when the "GP" was introduced to the civilians.
it's a car suitable for traveling over rough terrain. Jeep was originated by the American Bantam Car Company
nothing really. you could say "just empty every pocket" because thats what you do when you own a jeep. you put all your money into it so you can take it to moab. i'm lucky, i live only a few hours away. there are a few misconseptions about the terminology used. GP was just what it was called, it did not mean "general purpose". it was the used for length. there where others like the GA GB and so on. GP's where the size a cj5. another is that ford was the original company that started producing them. which again is wrong. they where first made by AM General. which was later bought out by General Motors. ford only produced them during World War II, along side of chrysler, kieser and a few other people. ford was the largest producer of the GP. Chrysler bought the rights to jeep in 80's i believe, and is the current owner of jeep... sorry for the little history lesson..

Bob needs to get his history right, the Jeep was produced for WWII by Willys Overland and Ford only.Willys made most of them in Toledo,Oh.Bantam came up with the ideal but Willys got it up to production faster and had a better 4cyl engine. The assembly plant in Toledo,Oh was the longest running auto assembly plant in the world untill 2006 when production of the Jeep Wrangler was moved to the new Toledo Parts Supplier Plant,AM General had nothing to do with it.What is so special about a subaru STI?
There are two answers to this question and both reinforce each other. The most obvious and first to come into general practice was the short form of "General Purpose" or GP to which the slang was Jeep. The 1/4 ton 4wd open vehicle with fold up windshield with canvas and bows top was used for many things in the military, it's primary development and distribution around WWII, from hauling mail to generals to wounded to ammunition to food rations to just about anything that would fit.The second answer was due to the affection and respect for it's agility and it's generally handy-to-have-around was from the Popeye cartoon character during that period. It was the almost mythical performance of both the vehicle and the character that drew affection and the adoption of the name, "Jeep."
