It could be a cracked flex plate. The flexplate is a round plate that connects the engine to the automatic transmission and has the ring gear that the starter turns against to start the engine. Some times these develope cracks and they make a metalic popping noise, one way to check this is to put the vehicle in gear and with the brakes applied and park brake on accellarate the motor to about 1000 RPM and see if the popping gets louder, if it does there is an inspection plate you can remove to visually inspect the flex plate for a crack.sounds like either you have an exhaust leak or bad ujoints
Could be a bad transmission mount. When driving the torque of the engine puts enough pressure on the mount to stop the noise, and when in park no torque is applied through the transmission so the noise is not evident. When in gear and idling a small amount of pressure is applied and allows the transmission to rattle in it's mount. If this is the problem it should not be a hard fix.
