Pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank with your next fill-up. I had the same problem on my 98 Wrangler, and it was resolved by the time I drove 100 feet from the gas pump.Next check the routine maintenance items: air filter, spark plugs (as previously mentioned), and distributor cap and rotor.

Another item to check is the exhaust. A crack can cause the engine to sputter as you describe. If you have a 6-cyl engine, the original exhaust was notorious for cracking about a foot from where it comes off the engine, right where two exhaust pipes come together in a "Y".

I've noticed folks have mentioned the fuel filter. On most cars, it is a good idea to replace it. On a TJ Wrangler (97-06), the fuel filter is inside the fuel tank. It is designed to be self-cleaning and maintenance-free, according to the factory service manual. It should not require changing or maintenance for life of the vehicle, barring extreme circumstances.

Best thing to do is start cheap and work your way up. Try putting a bottle of Valvoline fuel injector cleaner in your tank the next time you fill up. If that doesn't do the trick, check your maintenance schedule -- your Wrangler may need a tune-up. If it's still giving you grief, try replacing the fuel filter. If none of those things fixes the problem, you have an issue that will take a mechanic to fix, but I'm betting it'll run a lot smoother and have more power if you do all those things, and there's a good chance the bottle of fuel injector cleaner will fix it.How many gallons does a Toyota Corolla take and about how much?
You need to do general maintenance.Replace all the filters, including the fuel filter, and change all the spark plugs (bosch double sparks made a noticeable change in my jeep), and change the wires and distributer cap for better spark.

You may have problems finding a fuel filter on an early TJ - certainly on UK models they never get replaced because they just ain't there!

I have a 97 wrangler also. You should check a couple of things. In this order. Air filter may be clogged, sparkplugs, wireset, cap and rotor,o2 sensors (there are two), empty a can of fuel injector/system cleaner into your gas tank because they might be clogged. I would say to change the fuel filter but it is inside the gas tank.If none of these things work, have your fuel pressure tested. I hope for your sake you dont have a fuel system problem. Lots of work and expensive. If you do, the problem is going to be in the fuel pump. This fuel pump is an assembly with the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator among other things. Jeep charges $307 for the whole assembly. not including labor. Hope this helps.
