I would argue that the mk4 Jetta (like the 2001 you are considering) effectively raised the standards for compact cars and forced everyone else to raise the benchmarks for touch-feel quality of the interior, NVH reduction and standard features.

They are NOT, however, going to be as reliable as a trusty little Toyota or Honda. Some would say they make up for it with some European class and flavor and a more substantial feel though. Bottom line is if you really love the Jetta and you appreciate the difference then go for it.
