M y 1998 ford escort zx2 has a horrible sort of grinding or crunching sound when the steerwheel is turned hard left or right. been told its the cv boots then not cv boots. i do not want to take it to the dealer,

if it has power steering it could be that it is low on power steering fluid

Does it do it sitting still? If it only does it when moving then it could be the CV JOINTS but usually one side will go out before the other.
