What sensors effect the timing on a Ford Focus?

From the sounds of it, your steering column is not loose as in the mounting bolts. This complaint is usually the column is loose at the tilt part of it. This is a huge job and not for a beginner. The tilt housing is supported by a rotating ball system that gets loose because the bolts that hold it together come loose and then work themselves right out, hence the steering wheel is flopping all over the place. This generally does not wreck anything, but needs to be fixed as it is dangerous to drive. The whole column has to be disassembled as far as leaving the column in the truck, but all the top parts have to come apart before you can get at the tilt housing. This means all the under dash panels and electrical connections for the harnesses that run up the column have to be completely disconnnected and removed from the column. The steering wheel, steering lock plate, signal switch and harness, cruise lever and harness, ignition lock cylinder, tilt housing cover, and finally the actual tilt housing all have to be completely removed. Then you will see 4 Torex type bolts that attach to the column's sub-assembly. Remove them totally, clean the threads, apply some thread locker, and torque the crap out of them. This used to take me around three hours to do with lots of experience and special tools to do it. This is why I say it isn' t a job for beginners. Good luck.

What should I do to my SUV first?

If it's just the free play, no biggie. Locate the steering box under hood. See the big nut that has a threaded short post in the center. It has a screwdriver slot on top. Loosen lock nut while holding center piece still with screwdriver. Turn screw clockwise in until it gets snug-back out a tiny bit and tighten the big lock nut. Test drive it. If that works~goody~you're done.
