I own a shop, and what I think is this; Your radiator can in fact be the culprit, but it would overheat all the time, and not randomly, wouldn't it? The thermostat may be too hot of a thermostat for your vehicle, or faulty. The most common reason for this is; Not enought coolant in the radiator, and/or a bubble of air trapped in the system. A leak you cannot see will do this too. Have the system pressure tested along with the cap. Sometimes the lower hose must have a spring in it to keep it from collapsing, and if it's not there the hose will collapse, and cause this by restricting the flow of coolant. The (sensor) sending unit may be faulty, and the gauge could be bad also. An alternate method of checking the actual temperature may be required to determine if it is in fact overheating. You can use a meat type temperature probe (that you can buy at any grocery store) to compare it to. If it is in the middle, then is this where it is supposed to be? Is it in the red yet? The gauge will read up high sometimes until the thermostat opens and brings it back down, so unless it goes up to say 3/4 the way it may not be considered overheating. No one knows better than the owner of the vehicle, as they are used to the car, and know where it should be. Does any water come out the exhaust pipe? If so, you may have a bad head gasket. A pressure test will find it if you have any leaks. I have purchased a new thermostat that was no good, you might try to get a good one from somewhere like NAPA or one that sticks in the open position rather than the closed position. That would eliminate any chance of it being the thermostat causing an overheating problem. When it is cold in the morning, remove the radiator cap, and see if it's up to the top, or within about an inch of the top, if not fill it up to within an inch of the top of the neck. What about the sensor that turns on the fans? It could be bad and causing this. A scan tool could see the actual temperature of the engine, and can pinpoint any problems with the sensors. Finally; try to get the front of the vehicle up high, and let it sit until it cools completely, remove the radiator cap, and see if this doesn't work out any trapped air in the system. Another reason for this can be the incorrect coolant in the system.Glad to help out, Good Luck!

Some possibilities are leaves and other stuff blocking the airway between radiator and A/C condensor coil (looks like a smaller radiator in front of the radiator), blocked passage in the block or radiator, Improperly reading sensor or switch, bad fan relay not turning fans on, among other things.Contact for laurie petit vw engine builder in scotland?
I would check for the leaves first, it happens and is a visual inspection you can do (might have to remove a plastic cover to see). If there's some in there, clean them out and see if it runs cooler afterwards.

How long has it been since you've had the cooling system flushed? If it's been a while, might consider having that done, and not just a drain and fill, get a flush to clean out the system instead of just changing the coolant.
How can i tell the difference between ford motors?
You don't say if it just recently started going over the halfway mark, or if it has always done this since you've had the vehicle. That may be the normal operating temperature fot his vehicle if it's been that way since you've had it. Also, does it show what temperature it is at with numbers, or just a gauge without numbers for a general guideline? Either way, have a technician check it to see what the actual temperature is that it's running at, they can tell by using the diagnostic computer, it should give the actual temperature it's reading.

Do the fans come on at all when sitting there idling? If not, how about when you turn the A/C on inside the vehicle? The A/C should automatically turn the fans on when you have it on inside the vehicle (at least one, usually both). If not, check the relays for the fans, some have 2, one for the main fan, and one for the A/C.
