I have purchased a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country that came w/Trac Lock. What is this?

Question:
I know it isn't anything to do w/overdrive so I figure it is for some type of limited slip differential. Question is, does it need to stay on all the time, etc

Trac Lock is a form of a limited slip differential. It is not as good as a positraction differential but does supply about 20% tractive effort to the non slipping wheel.

trac lock is for when you start to spin tires on limited slip it locks in kinda like a 4x4 so u dont wear out anything on your drive tran

The differential id part of the transmission as it is front wheel drive. It is a form of anti lock brakes. It is on all the time unless the anti lock portion of your master cylinder fails, then you will just have normal old school brakes.

first of all i would not pay attention to all this guys they don't know jack sh!@#.i will tell you exactly what you have and don't have.what you have is an all wheel drive system which engaged all the time,no driver input is needed.what you don't have is a trac-lok.the term trak-lok is used for rear wheel drive vehicles or 4 wheel drive system in a dodge or jeep line up.it is a traction device that allows your wheel to have equal traction even one of the wheel decides to spin.your all wheel drive system is a bit more conplicated due to parts that are involved.it's main job is to equalized traction from front to rear,in the event your front tires are slipping a viscous coupler in your drive train will push most of the torque to the axle that has greater traction.make sure you get this things serv.at least every 60k miles.hopes this helps.
