Question:
I just bought a '98 Chevy 1500 4x4 with the Vortec 350. I love the truck, but everyone told me the gas mileage should be around 15-16 on average. But I'm getting 12 avg. if i'm easy on the accelerator...the truck has dual flowmaster exhaust, an open K&N cylindrical filter, the engine runs great and is smooth and powerful, there aren't any warning lights on. What can i possibly do to get my gas mileage up to where it should be, 15-16? And don't tell me 12 is normal...even fueleconomy.gov says it should be 14.8 on average.

don't expect good mpg in winter. I've got a 4.7 dakota that went from 15 avg to 12 in the cold weather. There could be a number of things. One whens the last time you changed your air filter. if it is clogged then it restricts the air flow causing a low MPG. Another is your exhausted if something restricts your exhaust that will also lower your MPG. the last is your fuel/air mixture if its off then you will lower your MPG. also check your tire pressure this can also be a factor in your MPG.
Premium gas for Chevy Cobalt SS.?
I know you don't want to hear this, but 12 sounds about right. You might get 15-16 on a 4x2 truck, but unlikely with a modified 4x4. The government websites are often optimistic and based on lab tests conducted under conditions that probably aren't the same as yours. Their guides stipulate that they are only estimates. Sorry...The good news is you can improve your vehicle's mileage somewhat by making sure the tires are properly inflated, the A/C is turned off most of the time (including when you run the defroster whether it's set on warm or cold), removing the aftermarket air system, remembering that your fuel injection system will recalculate the additional air in the engine and proportionately increase the fuel to keep the air/fuel ratio correct.
You can also greatly improve mileage by simply driving slower. A 10 MPH difference on the freeway can reduce fuel consumption by as much as 15%. And if the previous owner put larger off-road tires on, get those off of there and put the smaller stock size on which will reduce rotating weight, rolling resistance and improve fuel mileage.
what does the air pukp do on my 88 f150?
Larger than stock exhaust will cause the oxygen sensor to sense more air and richer the fuel mixture.Cold weather will also get bad gas mileage. My 350 only gets 13.9 mi. to the gallon and it`s 2 wheel drive.A defective vacuum line to the EGR valve could cause EGR not to work,Causing poor fuel mileage.Anyone any faults with their Vauxhall Vectra 05 design Model?

Yoy didn't say what size tires you have. I know on mine, 78 GMC, I have 33 inch tires and lost about 5 mpg because of them, I get about 12 with mine. Make sure everything is tuned up good proper plugs and oil will help some. If you install headers that will help a little more.looking for kit to put small block chevy into toyota pickup?
all gov. numbers are wrong, whatever they state, remove at least 4 to get the true mpg. so if they say 14.8 - 4 = 10.8 or 11...you say 12....you are doing good.my bmw 330 ci transmission problems?
you are driving a big truck w/ a 350, they drink gas. if you have a toolbox or anything in the bed as weight, that will decrease it even more.

I drive a Blazer....they say it should get 22mpg...that's a joke....I'm lucky to see 19 and since I carry stuff for work, its normally more around 16.
What's up with the Nissan Skyline?
well, it could be that your transmission is not shifting into overdrive, that would put the gas mileage where you state it to be. Another thing to check is that you are putting it into overdrive when you drive it and not drive, 2, or 1. If the overdrive is out of it, the rpm's will be up around 3000 or so at 60. check it out and you might find the problem. How to change brake light bulb on 2ooo beetle?
Those number were derived from being 100 persent stock, with the aftermark accessaries on it there is no way to get what people are telling you!!94 ford ranger, all transmission fluid lost, why?
well I hate to tell you that it did get 15 to 16 miles to the gallon but that was stock. It has less restrictive exhaust and a high perfomance air filter. It all gives you more horsepower which in return gives you less fuel mileage. you could change the fuel filter to get a little better fuel mileage.More Questions & Answers ...
