Why is Pontiac offing the Grand Prix for the G8 name?

Question:
Why is Pontiac (GM) getting rid of the Grand Prix name for the G8. It would have made more sense for them to say the Grand Prix got another make over, instead of cutting it off all together.

I changed the timing belt in my 1991 honda accord with automatic transmission.?

If poor auto sales are the excuse, it's not the Prix's fault, its been selling just fine for the last 40+ years with the same name.

What can i do?

So by mid 2008, Pontiac will be selling the G5, the G6, and the G8 (all very different models with similar names. Didn't Ford and Mercury try this (Naming all their cars with F's or M's) which failed miserably since nobody could remember all of them, or mixed them up?

I have a few thousand pounds..?

And I know the new G8's are based off of Australian designs (as was the recent GTO), but they won't be imports, right?

How do I drain my 1997 Chevy Astro van radiator?

Any other Grand Prix fans not happy about this. The G8 is a good looking car, though it could have been better with the Grand Prix name on it.

Where is the transmission dipstick on a toyota matrix xrs?

The G8 will be an all new vehicle with rear wheel drive. Quite the departure from the front wheel drive Grand Prix of today. The Grand Prix is a great car but the design is becoming dated so and update is neccessary. The new vehicle will be another step toward the global vehicle designs of GM so that these vehicles built and sold all around the world will share many key features and parts.

2004 Toyota Land Cruiser with Electrical Problems... Four-Way flashers won't stop blinking irratically.?

Hey bud, I feel for you, but probably if you asked a Pontiac sales person the age group that buys most Gran Prixs' they'd say 40 and up .. Right now Pontiac Motor Division is GMs' "most disposable" division and "Old mans" cars aren't where the money is, as always, younger, faster and sportier always sells as do "new" names or numbers.. Even to us "aging baby boomers" !!

Toyota Hybrid Prius?

I disagree N.E. I am 24 years old and I have owned a few Pontiac's in my little time on this earth. I am on my 3rd Grand AM GT ('96, '99' and now '04) and I also have a '05 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (SuperCharged). I also co-own with my girl friend a '06 Pontiac G6 GT.

Looking to buy a Japanese used 4WD Hyundai Tuscon. Good mileage. Anyone have one or can advise on buying one?

I don't believe that Pontiac's are old people's car...I think its what you personally prefer. While my Grand AM is no rocket, it isn't as bad as other cars on the road. And as far as slow...again my Grand Prix isn't a rocket either...but when you get the SuperCharger revved, it can be quite fun!

What does a Test code TC-153A on a 1997 Chrysler Town and Country LXi mean?

Oh...and to answer the original question, I would like to see Pontiac keep the Grand Prix name. I also would have liked it if they would have called the now G6 but the Grand AM name.

I replaced the spark plugs on my 323ci. Now, I hear a clicking sound & the lights come on, but it won't start.

Who knows...just bring it on...Grand Prix or G8...whichever name that choose I welcome it.

GM is hoping a name change will re-energize the line. They did the same thing with the following vehicles:

Can the Pontiac Solstice's Haartz Canvas top effectively shield out snow, rain, or cold?

They are just trying to bring some "new" back to an old label. When people hear "Grand Prix" and "Grand Am" they think old vehicles. When they hear "G5," "G6," or "G8" they think of the new again. It is just better (in some people's eyes) to own the "new" as opposed to the "old."

That's my take on it, anyway.

Compare 1998 corvette to 2005 Nissan 350Z convertible?

I agree with you 100 percent. They have had a good thing going for 40 years or so and they are going to end it? Makes since. I was kinda mad when Gm replaced the S-10 with the very ugly Colorado too. The only thing good they did was replace the cavalier/sunfire with the colbalt/G5. I checked out the G8 and I think it looks pretty cool, but like you said it would be better with the Grand Prix name on it, probably would sell better too. Does anyone know if they are going to make it in a 2-door model?

Do you think a 2003 ford escape can get up to 120 mph top speed?

Like the others said, it's just a name change to try to reenergize the lineup. Plus there is too much "grand" models, or models in general with similar names. Grand Prix, Grand Am, Granville, Bonneville, Can-Am, Trans Am, Fiero, Firebird, Sunbird, Sunfire, I'm sure you see where this is going. I can't even recall anymore how many times my old grand prix was called a grand am, and how many times my GTO was called a GTP (referring to the grand prix GTP, and now the G6 GTP)

1995 Mercury Sable now brake fluid to rear calipers?

As for the names--it's all marketing, perhaps faulty marketing. Pontiac seems to have this fascination with tech sounding names (remember the 1000/2000/6000 in the 80's?). The G8 is Australian Holden based, and I saw one at the Chicago Auto show this year, it's hot. I didn't know they were dumping the GP though, which is dumb 'cause it's been bread and butter for Pontiac for many years. Could be a GM corporate call, too.

My Vauxhall Astra 1.4 i keeps cutting out?

I think we all hate the G# names, right? But the question is flawed. Pontiac has not announced plans to end the Grand Prix nameplate. In fact, the G8 is not going to have the initial production capability to replace it entirely. I would imagine the G8 will appeal to current Grand Prix and GTO owners, but there will still be a place for a FWD big car in Pontiacs lineup for a while, anyway.

My kid has a 1996 chevy lumian 4 door sedan.?

The Grand Prix name is exclusive to the current assembly plant in Canada per the union contract. Since the G8 will be imported from Australia, they can't use the Grand Prix name.

What is stronger a H22 engine or a type R?

The G8 is replacing the Grand Prix, but it is not the same car. Pontiac is doing two things, first off they are re-energizing the brand (as other said), but secondly, this is a completely new lineup for pontiac. It IS an import, they will not manufacture the car in the states. It is not a redesign of the existing Grand Prix, it is a totally new car. Pontiac is replacing the Grand Prix, because they would in essance be competing with themselves if they kept both cars.
