I have a 1987 F-150 2wd p/u with a 4spd granny low can I change it to a 5spd with no problems?

The 5spd is coming out of a 88 F-150 2wd. Is there any difference in length or line for slave cylinder . Basically will there be any modifying?

It wont be fun but if you can get any parts you need from the donor truck it will work . If it were mine I would leave the 4 speed alone unless it was not working properly. Unless the 5 speed is an overdrive your final gear ratio is 1 to 1 on both trannys so it wont help your mpg.

the biggest and most expesive modification will be the drive shaft. you may have to move the crossmember as well and the clutch splines will be different. speedo hookup might be a problem, as well as the hydraulics being from two different year models. it would be best to have the other truck available for the complete changover provided they are both the same wheelbase. ford was doing a lot of improvements to the clutch hydraulics during those years so look closely for any differences before you start the job.

Gary is right... I would get mighty expensive and become a big pain in the you know what. I don't think it is worth it to tell you the truth. You could buy a new Ford F-150 for the time and money you would invest in that modification.
