my friend taught me how to drive stick in a civic, but he never let me get beyond 3000 rpms b4 shifting. if i just want to have some fun will i harm da engine shifting at higher rpms or was he just scured i'd redline his car.

if it is your car, and you have good oil in it I would go for itI worked at a shop that works on tuner cars, a stock civic (you don't specifiy which year) has a built-in rev limiter. You can shift at just about red line if you want, just make sure the car is in good tune and you change the oil on a regular schedule. More often is better than not enough. Besides, oil changes are cheap compared to an engine re-build.

my Revs meter Shift-light is set at 6200rpm..mean.. i shift the gear in those rev.. now thats fun.. (even better wit an metal clutch equiped tranny )
you can shift any time before you redline it or if you race/drift you can shift while in the red zone but since its probaly just a regular daily driven car theres no need to redline it. no harm will be done shift at 4000, 5000 rpm.
