the first would be to get an RD engine out of a newer Golf/Jetta. The RD is a 10:1 compression ratio engine and will give more performance. To maximize the performance the knock sensor system from the RD engine should also be incorporated.
The other option is to get an Audi 2.0 engine from an Audi 80 or Audi 90. This will basicaly bolt in but there is some combination of Audi parts and VW parts used. We did this conversion on my 85 Scirocco and it took a couple of weeks to get all the correct parts to make it work.
