Shifting in an 87 monte ss?

Question:
The 87 Chevrolet monte carlo ss has an automatic transmission with the gears d,d1,d2,d3,d4; my question is: when is it appropriate to use each of these gears, and in what speed to rpm to gear ratio should i shift them for the best results, like as if i were leaving a small neighborhood, driving through downtown, then getting on the highway.

It's an automatic transmission.
Put it in "D" and drive, the trans will shift from low to high according to the engine speed and load.
All those numbers and letters were a sales gimmick and had nothing to do with anything.
The lower gears are met for steep hills or getting stuck, but, and I say a big but: even on the steepest hill or in the worst snow, your trans will still shift properly if you just put it in "D" and go.
The only time you shift differently is with cars that have overdrive, and even then the car will automaticaly shift according to engine speed.

is it just me or all 1984- 87 corolla gts and sr5 stupid over priced?

What is the name of the woman in the suzuki xl7 commercial who is riding the motorcycle?

If you are just cruising around town in 25mph-35mph limits, you can leave it in d2 or d3. It will just give you more responsive acceleration because it's in a lower gear and won't go into any higher of a gear.
You can shift this to have better acceleration but, I don't know what rpm you should shift at. Those just limit what gear the car is allowed to go into. as in it won't go any higher than 2nd in d2 or higher than 3rd in d3. But you will still start off in 1st gear.

GMC Envoy Owners... How many miles will I get on a single tank of gas?

Let the automatic trans. do the shifting. If you have the stock 305 engine in the car do not over rev. this motor. It's not designed to run over 5,000 rpm. It's not built to be screamed. The camshaft. intake manifold small valves and small intake runners in the cylinder heads are all designed to be an economy motor. If you want a nasty high torque Chevy engine save your money for a 383 crate motor from A Chevrolet dealer. From then just hang on.

is there a difference between the 07 volkswagen gti and 07 volkswagen rabbit?

Unless you're racing the thing let the transmission shift itself. Under the conditions you describe there is no advantage to doing it yourself. About the only thing you COULD do in town is put the shifter in D-3 which locks the tranny is 3rd gear and it won't be "hunting" for a gear...that is trying to figure out whether it should be in 3rd or 4th.
