I'm looking for suggestions for an exhaust (I want to avoid the rice sound at all costs!), headers (stainless steel, please), Strut and Sway bars, and some other minor stage one modifications. I'm looking for mid-line items- nothing bottom-of-the-barrel but I am on a bit of a budget.

That's a great car to work on!! There are a lot of parts available for pretty reasonable prices. For exhaust you could look at Tanabe, JIC, Apex'i. Look at Tein for suspension mods, they make great parts for a great price. Greddy and I think HKS make SS headers for the KA motor. Check out Options Auto Salon and Vivid Racing, both sites have a great selection. I would suggest going with the simple mods first (intake, exhaust, Ignition). Another option, if you have room in the budget, is to bag the KA and do a SR20DET swap. well if you want to avoid the rice farting sound, you need a real good exhaust...like the real ones (expensive ones) the quality is much better because of the welds and shapes. you might also want to turbo it. i have a honda civic EX 97 and i made the biggest mistake of putting the farting afterstock on it. amazingly it sounds decent, but then again, its still a honda...You should tailor your mods to what you want to do with the car.

I think the best place to start is with suspension. A good cheap part that can make a big difference in the car is subframe spacers. They preload the rear subframe and eliminate wheel hop. You can order them here.

If your car doesn't have an LSD, its worth putting one in. You can go with a stock viscous unit for a decent price.
None of this stuff will make your car more flashy, but it will make it more fun to drive and a bit faster due to better traction and handling.

For power, start with an exhaust and intake. Don't go too huge on the exhaust unless a turbo is in your future. The KA can be very loud and a huge exhaust will hurt your power more than help it.

i have a 97 altima with the same engine and ive done enough research for the both of us looking for upgrades. the joy of a 4-cylinder comes with the fact that when looking for headers, u only need one...haha, well, anyways, jeggs has a great selection of headers, such as hookers (some of the nicest ones). they will improve gas mileage, and if paired with good exhaust, sound good too. just check out a jeggs catalog for headers. if u do want to go with a turbo, its a decent choice for the engine, however, they can be pricey, but there are ways around that. check ebay, ive found turbo kits there for about 900-1000 dollars, much cheaper than retail. below are a few links for upgrade accesories, as well as turbo information. hope i could be of help and good luck!do you think the nissan skyline is copying another car?

go ahead and get a turbo for your engine if you are not in the budget for a swap. you will see a definate change in your car from vroom to HOLY$***. if you decide this upgrade go for a 2and1/2 front to a 3in back otherwise youll be restricting the power.
