There is 300,000 kms on her and she only seems to tick when she gets hot. Starts ticking after driving approx. 15 min. Caprice still has lots of balls to her, sounds like metal on plastic. I thought it was the fan slightly hitting the fan guard NOT. Mechanic is stumped, No oil leaks, tranny leaks, antifreeze leaks, everything A ok. Not burning any fluid either. Any ideas?

Tapits have a larger gap when the engine is a little worn out,may have to ad a fiber shim on the noisy side ofr the rod, no big deal but those engines are forever, if i were you i would wear ear plugs, an old chev 8 with 300,000 miles is better than some of the new garbage, i wish i had kept mine.

worn out lifters.. also look at rocker atms they can ware out.with that many miles/k its time for a long block replacement..

Valve guides being excessively worn can click too.Most probable thing is a rocker arm. I put 720,000 kms. on a 91 Caprice and replaced the rocker arms twice. Another a 92 Caprice, 647,000 kms. Replace once. Worth checking.

Some of your answer above are valid however if the car not yet received a TIMING CHAIN I would look into it. When they get worn the chain can slap against the cover. Easy way to locate noises in an engine is a 3 foot piece of garden hose. Put one end up to your good ear and move the other end around the engine when the noise is present.
