Hi I have a subaru wrx. I plan on changing the exhaust to an aftermarket one both for the sound and slight increase in performance (with a cobb accessport v2). However I was wondering if until then I can temporarily just take off the muffler, catback exhaust, and not put another one back on. would this be safe? I only want to try it out. my friend took off the his whole exhaust except the uppipe (obviously) and put no replacement from his Audi S4 and it ran fine but was real loud. I dont care bout the loudness since this if this does work I can put it back on.

*You can, the turbo provides the needed back pressure.*Performance will be better than stock, same as any freeflow cat-back system.
*Depending on where you live ticket and impound fees could be about the same as a cat-back system.
*There is a reason ehaust pipes go to the BACK of the car, if you sit at idle to long you will die of CO poisoning.

yes, you can do that. i don't know what the wrx looks like from the underside, but if you're lucky you can just unbolt it from the flange somewhere behind the cat; if not, you can take a saw to it. it will hinder the performance because it will then be an incomplete exhuast system. a good exhaust system should efficiently channel the exhaust out of the engine, and without the rest of it on the back you may get some atmospheric pressure pushing back into the pipe, which makes it harder to get the exhaust out.My 1994 Jeep Cherokee (2 WD) shakes at 56 mph and higher, what's typically wrong?
it will be loud and obnoxious. if you get pulled over, have an exhaust piece or something in the back seat to show the cop that you're going to have it installed in the muffler shop. a louder car does not mean better performance, nor does a bigger exhaust system.

Running around with just your downpipe(not "uppipe") is gonna get you pulled over fast. Specially in a subbie. I thought about doing this on my srt-4 until i heard one runnin like it, very scarey.my 1996 corsica rear speakers?
If anything, keep your piping on up until the muffler(should be connected by clamps), and see how it sounds....but i would just go driving around downpipe only.

You can remove the exhaust system, it's a turbo and you will notice a gain in horsepower. You do NOT need backpressure because the turbo will supply that. However it's not all sweet because the car will sound horrible unless you are only using this at a track. You will get a ticket... funny thing is that the turbo will help quiet the car down a lot. nope I believe there is a 02 sensor after that car that is part of the omissions system. car will not run.the answer above me is wrong. the O2 sensor is before the cat back on the WRX.

the car will run great (especially if you leave it off long enough to let the ECU adapt to the change) but it's REALLY REALLY loud. seriously. I had a VERY loud exhaust on my WRX, and this will blow your mind. you'll have it off for one drive, then likely reinstall it.
as you've probably read, if you're looking to modify the exhaust for power and sound, start at the uppipe, then downpipe. the catbacks arent' that restrictive.
