Audi TT - I like the Audi, though at times I am not entirely sure why. It's a good car and a nice package, but one that seems lacking in many ways. It's a little too heavy to be a real sports car. And for that same reason, despite a fair amount of power, it can feel a little lacking under some conditions. Yet it feels a little too small with traces of real sportcar harshness to be a more luxurous GT. Mercedes SLK - Another case of being too heavy for it's engine. However, unlike the TT, this is a car which pushes just far enough towards being a more luxurious GT car that it makes a better fit. The current SLK looks good has is a sporty car if not exactly a sportscar. Though because it's a small convertible, it suffers many of the drawbacks of a sportscar. Another good, but not great package. I would consider this car a little ahead of the TT, but not far enough ahead to give it more than 3 Stars * * *
Porsche Boxster S - on paper, the Boxster is not that far ahead of these competitors, but on the road it becomes a case where all of the little things add up to a big difference! First off, it is a sportscar. It's a well balanced car, and it excels in all the places a performance car should. It's not perfect though as most current Porsches have not had interiors befitting a car in their price class (though the new 987s and 997s have made strides in this area). Yet, if this is a major concern, some of the other cars mentioned here might be a better fit. I know if I had to choose one of these cars to take to Laguna Seca or Mid-Ohio for the day, this would be it! For that reason and it's great chasis, 5 Stars * * * * *

Z4 - the Z4 is an interesting car. In so many ways it is a sports car, yet with things like drive by wire, it seems to be moving to make the driver more removed from the driving experience (which to my mind, isn't what a sports car is about). The Z4 features a very good chasis and a great all around package. In terms of balancing luxury, usability, and performance, this is probably the best of these four. Yet, for doing everything good, it doesn't do anything great! It's an easy car to like, but I am not sure I could love it. Which means a very respectable, but not quite leading, 4 Stars * * * *

DRIVING & HANDLING:
Porsche ***** (simply the most sporty package, and the only mid-engine setup among these four)
Audi **** (a bit front-heavy, but road-hugging and difficult to out-drive in the wet if you get the 4WD (quattro) version)
BMW *** (sportier than the Benz, but BMWs tend to be tricky in slippery conditions)
Mercedes *** (more emphasis on comfort)

Not sure I want to really rank them on this dimension. It's too controversial. Some think Mercedes is the best name in cars, others believe the brand is a bit "dusty" and old-fashioned. BMW has more of an image of a "driver's car" combined with quite a bit of sophistication and refinement. Audi, to me, is a brand with a bit of healthy understatement - kind of like the wolf in sheeps' clothing. On the Autobahns in Germany, it's often the Audis that outpace the Benzes and the BMWs. (I've even hunted down Porsches with my old 1999 Audi S6 station wagon). Porsche, in my mind, is still a class of its own. But I'm biased (I drive a Cayman S now), and for some people, a Porsche is too much of a braggers car. I don't care. It handles like a dream, and to me, there's no better car if you enjoy driving fast. Any more sporty than a Porsche and you have to make major sacrifices in terms of every-day use.

Audi TT: 4/5 stars, assuming you mean the new one(if you meant the old, bubbly one, this rating doesnt apply. thats closer to 2/5 stars). Finally got a better motor in them, made them less feminine (although still great looking, it got the 07 world car design of the year award.), improved pretty much everything on them and turned them into a decent sports car. Overall a very good car on a good platform. The motor is also VERY tunable (the 2.0T is a 1.8T variant that VW/audi has been using for years. a chip will net you like 50 hp due to the electronically controlled wastegate for the turbo).

Mercedes SLK: 2/5 stars. Boring to drive, especially for a roadster, sacrifices far too much for luxury, and isnt that realible. Too soft of suspention, too much gadgetry, way way too heavy to be a decent roadster. Its a decent car, just a crappy roadster/sportscar. I wouldnt waste my time or money.
Z4: 4/5 stars. Looks great, handles fairly well, motor is decent. Should be decently reliable. Far more fun to drive than the mercedes. Could have more power, and a bit less weight, but overall a pretty good car.
1990 Comanche with oil in the air cleaner?
Boxster S: 6/5 stars. Yes thats right, 6/5. Its the best premium roadster on the market (miatas the best cheap one). Built like a tank (if you worked on porsches youd understand), handles amazingly well, ride is still good, plenty of motor. huge amount of potential so your driving skill will grow into it (if you do some trackdays like i hope you will :)). Overall a great car.
Ive got a toyota automatic transmission. when do i need to use the off drive/on drive button?
note: I didnt factor in things like trunk space, because im assuming you wont need much if these are what youre looking at. The TT has the largest of these though.
