My 1996 corsica rear speakers?

Question:
in my 1996 chevy corsica i am trying to put in new 6x9s because the stock ones crack snackle pop...so i want to put in rockford 4 ways ones..in the back of my car there is like a carpet on top of the 6x9s with a thin layer of wood...any guys out there dun this b4 because i tryed to do it and all im doing to cracking the wood/cardboard..
