From what I have understood from Nissan when ordering parts (i'm a mechanic and am always on the phone with them) is that it will be released as a 2009 modle in 2008. HOWEVER, it will not be called an Nissan Skyline, it will be badged as an INFINITY as to the original Skylines being Illegal most everywhere in north america, for certing reasons, except if imported to north american and are over 10 years old (by the way, ex-drift skylines are extremly fun to drive). I cannot remember the exact name i was told for this. But I have heard this straight from Nissan, although this may be only 50/50 of the story. Nissan in Japan is just that, Nissan. And they have always produced the Skyline. Here in the US, Infinity (Nissan luxury division) made the Skyline available under the “G35” name.

The GT-R was never brought to the US due to emissions problems. Nissan decided not to export it or produce it here (it would have required multiple modifications to make it “street legal”). Nissan only used the Fairlady Z (here known as the 300ZX) as their top of the line sports car.

Since sales dropped so much in 1995-96, Nissan discontinued the model all together here, but kept producing it in Japan until 1999. The idea of bringing here the GT-R would have been ridiculous.

Although Nissan doesn’t make the GT-R here in the US, many have successfully imported it from Japan; most of them have done the necessary modifications to be emissions compliant, and other have opted to stay illegal (as many other cars are lately since Fast And The Furious hit the big screen).

We do have the Skyline here as the Infinity G35 as I just mentioned above. On the other hand, in 2005 Nissan announced in Japan that the GT-R is going to be made again, separately from the Skyline itself. This time, and for the first time in history, it will be not only produced for Japan, but also for the US market. It will be available in the middle of 2007 in Japan, and in spring of 2008 here in the US.
Nissan has not talked about what will be inside, we have only seen the concept or “proto” as they called it (http://www.nissanusa.com/gt-r/ ). Unofficial sources say it will have the same VQ35 engine from the G35 / 350Z (V6 3.5L) but might be modified to 3.7L. No matter what, it is almost a fact that no matter what engine, it will be a Twin Turbo, with AWD (All Wheel Drive) and AWS (All Wheel Steering or Super HICAS as Nissan calls it). Power is expected to be around 400-500HP.
If you are interested in one, you will be able to buy it in a year from now, as long you can afford it at a price tag of $70,000 as per Nissan.
